Summer evenings hold a special charm – a chance to unwind after long, sun-filled days and embrace the gentle peace as the world cools down. But between barbecues, beach trips, and extended daylight hours, it’s easy to forget the importance of self-care.
As the sun sets on a busy summer day, it’s the perfect time to unwind and treat yourself to some much-needed self-care. Incorporating evening self-care rituals into your routine can help you relax, rejuvenate, and prepare for a restful night’s sleep. Here are some ideas for creating a relaxing and rejuvenating self-care routine that blend relaxation techniques, skincare, and mindfulness practices to help you wind down and make the most of these warm summer nights. 1. Create a Relaxing Atmosphere
Set the stage for relaxation by creating a serene environment. Dim the lights, light some scented candles, or use an essential oil diffuser with calming scents like lavender, chamomile (Roman), or sandalwood. Play soft, soothing music or nature sounds to create a tranquil ambiance.
2. Hydrating and Refreshing Skincare Routine
After a day of sun and outdoor activities, your skin deserves some pampering. Start with a gentle cleanser to remove dirt, sweat, and sunscreen. Follow up with a hydrating toner such as the Wild Rose Facial Toner from Mountain Rose Herbs to refresh your skin. Then apply a lightweight moisturizer or nighttime cream such as this Neroli Night Cream to rejuvenate and revitalize your skin while you sleep. Don’t forget to use an eye cream to soothe tired eyes. For an extra treat, use a jade roller to reduce puffiness and promote relaxation.
3. Herbal Teatime
Sipping on a cup of herbal tea can be a calming way to end your day. Choose teas with relaxing properties, such as chamomile, peppermint, or valerian root. My favorite bedtime teas are Yogi Bedtime Tea and Traditional Medicinals Nighty Night Extra Tea. These herbs can help reduce stress and promote better sleep. Make your tea time a mindful experience by focusing on the warmth of the cup, the aroma of the herbs, and the soothing taste.
4. Gentle Evening Stretching or Yoga
Incorporating gentle stretching or yoga into your evening routine can help release tension from your muscles and calm your mind. Opt for slow, restorative poses that focus on deep breathing and relaxation. Poses like child’s pose, forward folds, and legs-up-the-wall can be particularly soothing. This practice not only relaxes your body but also prepares your mind for rest. Here is a video by Dr Jo that I use as part of my nightly bedtime routine.
5. Mindfulness and Meditation
Spend a few minutes practicing mindfulness or meditation to center yourself and let go of the day’s stresses. Find a quiet spot, sit comfortably, and focus on your breath or find a quiet spot outdoors and practice a short meditation under the soft glow of the moon. Focus on the sounds of nature and the gentle rhythm of your breath. Or simply, sit quietly taking the sun as it sets. If you’re new to meditation, guided meditations can be a helpful way to start. Apps like Headspace, Calm, or Insight Timer offer a variety of guided meditations tailored for relaxation and sleep or you can find some in our members only Inner Spark Library as well as my YouTube channel.
6. Journaling for Reflection
Take some time to reflect on your day by journaling. Writing down your thoughts, feelings, and experiences can be a therapeutic way to process your emotions. You can also use this time to jot down things you’re grateful for, set intentions for the next day, or simply doodle and let your creativity flow. Journaling helps clear your mind and can provide a sense of closure for the day.
7. Digital Detox
Give yourself a break from screens and technology at least an hour before bedtime. The blue light emitted by phones, tablets, and computers can interfere with your sleep cycle. Instead, opt for activities that don’t involve screens, such as reading a book, doing a puzzle, or engaging in a hobby like knitting or drawing.
8. Warm Bath or Shower
A warm bath or shower can be incredibly relaxing after a long day. Add some Epsom salts or a few drops of essential oils to your bath for an added touch of luxury. I also like these herbal bath salts. The warm water will soothe your muscles, while the aromatic oils can help calm your mind. If you prefer a shower, use a gentle body scrub to exfoliate and rejuvenate your skin.
9. Gratitude Practice
End your evening self-care routine with a gratitude practice. Reflect on three things you are grateful for that happened during the day. Focusing on positive experiences can shift your mindset and promote a sense of well-being. You can write these down in your journal or simply say them out loud or hold them in your mind as you prepare for sleep.
10. Preparing Your Sleep Environment
Lastly, ensure your sleep environment is conducive to rest. Keep your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet. Consider using blackout curtains, earplugs, or a white noise machine to create the perfect sleep setting. If you like fancy, here is a white noise machine that also has colorful nightlights. Make your bed with comfortable, breathable linens, and fluff your pillows for added coziness.
So, as the summer sun dips below the horizon, take this opportunity to pamper yourself, quiet your mind, and savor the magick of a warm summer evening.
By incorporating these self-care rituals into your summer evenings, you can create a sanctuary of relaxation and rejuvenation. These practices not only help you unwind after a busy day but also promote better sleep and overall well-being. Remember, self-care is not a luxury or selfish; it’s a necessity. Take the time to nurture yourself and embrace the tranquility of summer nights.
